TIMES HAVE CHANGED — even when it comes to documenting visible emissions observations. Legal challenges have become more sophisticated, detailed, and expensive, which means success in court cases often depends on accurate documentation.

Documentation standards and requirements have therefore become more thorough. You must be able to provide accurate data concerning observation conditions and geometric measurements in relation to your position.

You have to have the tools to do it right.

ETA now offers a series of products and software that provide you with the tools and forms you need to properly document an observation.

cd

Visible Emissions Training CD
$149.00 (for ETA Smoke School students)
$350.00 (for non ETA Smoke School students)

CD features:
Video images of plumes
Sample plume views in 5% increments from 0-100% opacity
Flashcard practice mode
Normal practice mode with five difficulty levels
Practice test mode
Practice test form (PDF)
Visible Emission Obvservation form (PDF)
Adobe Acrobat Reader 4
Environmental Web links
Information on products for emissions observers

System Requirements: Windows 98 with 20 megs of ram and 30 megs of hard drive space.

Important Note: The Visible Emissions Training CD is NOT a replacement for field training or certification. You CANNOT certify via a video or computer smoke school. Plumes on the CD illustrate optimum conditions of contrast, however computer monitors differ in resolution and color.

The CD DOES allow you to practice and prepare for smoke school every six months, making certification easier and reducing stress. The CD is designed to provide practice in resolving differences in plumes under ideal conditions. The ability to resolve differences between opacities is one of the two keys to successful smoke reading. The second is recognition of standards.

sundog

SunDog2

SunDog
$15.00 (Injection-molded plastic)
$75.00 (Brass model for ETA Smoke School students)
$100.00 (Brass model for non ETA Smoke School students)

Often the most difficult problem facing smoke readers is ensuring that the sun is within the 140-degree vertical and horizontal sectors relative to the observer's back as specified in EPA Method 9. Being out of sun angle is a common compliance issue. We designed the SunDog to solve that problem.

In less than a minute, you can determine if the sun angle is correct before conducting observations. This can prevent wasting your time, money, and credibility by filing an invalid observation.

SunDog features:
• Cast in brass, hand finished, and laser aligned for accuracy
• A near-indestructible instrument you will be proud to use and display
